Bringing the community to life

Welcome, goodbye and boost thanks

Three messages that have the same structure. Anyone who can set up one can set up all three.

The three areas

  • Welcome, sent when somebody joins the server.
  • Goodbye, when somebody leaves the server. Also on kick and ban.
  • Boost message, when somebody boosts the server.

Each one has its own channel, its own text and its own look. So you can show the welcome message as a large image card in the main channel and the goodbye message as a plain line in the team channel.

Placeholders

The bot fills in these building blocks when sending:

PlaceholderBecomes
{user}mention of the member, creates a notification
{user.name}just the name, without a mention
{server}name of the server
{memberCount}current member count

Ping or no ping

A separate switch defines whether the new member is additionally mentioned. On small servers that is friendly. On a server with many joins per hour it quickly turns the welcome channel into a flood of notifications, better switched off in that case.

The avatar on the card

By default the image card shows the member's avatar. Two things about that:

  • You drag the position and size of the avatar freely into place in the preview.
  • For animated avatars the bot draws a still image. An image card is a picture, not an animation, that is intended and not a fault.

Designing the message itself

If you leave all fields empty, the bot sends a translated default text in your server's language. That is a usable start, but interchangeable, the two minutes for a sentence of your own are worth it.

In the message designer you set the title, description, color, author line, footer and any number of fields. For the image card there are also the background image, the font and the banner texts. Image cards or embeds describes both in detail.

Common pitfalls

  • No message arrives. First check whether the bot may write in the chosen channel, channel permissions, not server permissions. That is by far the most common reason.
  • The goodbye message is missing on kicks. It is sent then as well; if it is not, the area itself is switched off.
  • The placeholder appears literally in the message. Then it is written incorrectly, they are curly brackets, and upper and lower case matter: {user}, not {User}.
  • The card does not appear, only an embed. Either the area is set to Embed only, or there is no active subscription. The bot deliberately falls back to the embed instead of sending nothing at all.

A word on what it is for

A welcome message is not an end in itself. It works best when it answers a question new members have anyway: where do I start? One sentence pointing to the rules or introductions channel achieves more than three lines of welcoming phrases.
