Auto-create Discord voice channels: getting the layout right
A room that opens itself and closes itself again sounds like less work, until the category hangs in the wrong place and every new room inherits its permissions. Here is what you settle before the first room: access, position, limit, and how much the owner is allowed to do.
No Administrator permission required. Set it up in the web dashboard.
Why this goes wrong
The module has exactly one field for the entrance, and that is precisely where most layouts fail. Anyone wanting a separate entrance for gaming and for quiet ends up registering only one of them; the other stands around as a mute voice channel, people walk in, walk out again and conclude that the module is broken. The same trap sits with the category. Every room comes into being underneath it and takes on whatever permissions are set there: close it once for a role and that also holds for every conversation still to happen there. The third point is not technical but about trust: the owner gets real permissions over his room. Anyone who does not know exactly which ones either never dares to use the module or uses it far too naively.
What to decide first
Start with access, not with names. Who may enter the entrance decides who gets a room at all. That is your only real door, everything after that plays out inside the room. If the whole thing should only be open to verified members, take the connect right away from the server default on the entrance channel and grant it to the role you mean. Second, the position. The category grows and shrinks all day long, so it belongs where that movement bothers nobody: at the lower end of the list, not in between your important channels. Leave the category field empty and the rooms end up in the same category as the entrance. That is convenient, but it only makes the decision invisible, not unnecessary. Third, the limit: it applies to every new room alike, because there is only one of them. Set it generously and leave the fine-tuning to the people themselves.
Step by step
- First settle which role may enter the entrance channel, and set the permissions there before any room exists.
- Hang the category at the lower end of the channel list and go through its permissions: whatever sits there applies straight away to every room below it.
- Register the entrance channel; leave the category field empty only if the rooms really should stand right next to the entrance.
- Give the three naming schemes different openings so that entrance, control panel and rooms stay apart in the sidebar.
- Go in yourself, click your way once across the control panel and leave again. The room has to disappear that very moment.
The mistakes almost everyone makes
The classic is two entrances. There is only one field for it, so only one counts; the other stays an ordinary voice channel with no effect whatsoever. Just as common: building rooms by hand next to it, just in case. The system does not know those channels, it never clears them away, and in the end you are back to the long list you wanted to be rid of. The third mistake is quieter. Take away the bot’s right to manage channels and it is not only the creating that fails: the clearing up drops out too, and the empty rooms simply stay, without any notice appearing anywhere. Fourth, the category: set it to hidden because the list got too long for you, and nobody finds the room where the talking is happening either. And fifth, the expectation that a music bot keeps a room open. It does not.
Frequently asked questions
One, because the setting takes no more: there is exactly one field for the entrance ID. Different kinds of rooms are not solved through several entrances but inside the room itself: every owner renames and sets their own limit. If you really need two separate worlds, a fixed voice channel beside it is more honest than a second entrance that does nothing.
No. He gets five permissions, and only as an exception on exactly his room: manage channel, move members, mute members, connect and view. Outside that one room nothing changes for him, so he can neither delete anything elsewhere nor touch roles. The block button additionally refuses to hit the owner himself or anybody holding the manage server permission.
On its own the bot clears a room only once no human is sitting in it any more; a music or recording bot present does not count as a visitor. If rooms stay anyway, the bot is almost always missing the right to manage channels. That is the first place to look. Leftovers after a crash are not a permanent state: at the next start the bot walks its list and deletes whatever is empty or gone already.
No. Anyone who already owns a room is simply pushed back into it the next time they enter the entrance, instead of getting a second one. Anyone jumping in and out by the second gets pulled out of voice entirely for a moment; ten seconds later it works again. Those two together are why no chain of empty rooms builds up.
